it, but most americans believe the nra propaganda. the nra buys scholars. they buy statistics. it's just wrong. >> lies. total lies. britain has strong gun control, for example. and averages 35 gun murders a year. america has very lax gun control and has 11,000. britain is about a fifth the size of america. i can do simple math. japan has the toughest gun control in the world. they have two or three murders a year. australia had a massacre in the '90s. they brought in a ban on all main high-powered guns and assault rifles and so on. they have had no mass shootings since. this is not rocket science. it's there to be had. the problem is that the nra, and i'm sure mr. jones is a big fan of theirs and probably helps them. >> he probably thinks they're way, way,way too much part of the establishment. he's way, way to the right of the nra. >> the political power the nra now wield means that politicians are too coward to say anything. i have people say to me, you're so brave. hot is brave about wanting to stop 20 more children getting murders? >> i don't think it's the nra power. it's pe

. -- this forum. my name is curtis. i am a gun owner. a hunter. a former nra member. i have very serious concerns about the inability to come up with a good definition for an assault weapon. several people this evening have pointed out how difficult coming up with a definition is. i have a rather simple solution. make semiautomatics illegal. class them the same as a fully automatic weapon. i believe that for hunting purposes, it is not that hard to work a bold action or lever action -- bolt action or lever action. a lot of people prefer to hunt with a single shot. magazine capacity, i see no reason for any more than three rounds. if you need more than three rounds when you are hunting, you need to spend some time at the range before going out. [laughter] that is all. [applause] >> my name is sharron. -- sharon. many thank you's to congressman thompson. you're a brave and courageous representative for taking on this issue. i spent quite a bit of time over the last couple of weeks reading and talking about this on the internet. the number of death threats against senator feinstein is astonishing. t

millions of gun owners and their ultrapowerful lobbying group the nra. the latest push coming from senator dianne feinstein, the california democrat who authored the nation's original ban on assault weapons in the 1990s, but this ban would reportedly be much more strict. it would trap current gun owners and outlaw the future sale of some handguns and shotguns. joe johns joins us from washington, i understand that senator feinstein will show up holding a bushmaster. >> reporter: we don't know if she'll be holding it but we know she is going to have some weapons present that would be banned under her proposal, that would include bushmaster, as you know, they're fairly well-known, a bushmaster was we believe used by the shooter in newtown, connecticut. now, we know the broad outlines of what feinstein is likely to promow propose. it's been public for weeks. we look for detail, we expect a revised ban on the so-called military style assault weapons led to believe that means banning the sale, transfer, importation or manufacturing of about 150 firearms, some rifles, even possibly handguns, shot

the nra and even harry reid questions whether it can pass congress. how hard would you push for assault weapons ban, and if one cannot pass congress, what other measures would need to be included in a broad package in order to probe of gun violence successfully. >> the vice-president and a number of members of my cabinet went through a very thorough process over the past month, meeting with a lot of stakeholders, including the nra. listened to proposals from all quarters, and they have presented me now with a list of sensible, common-sense steps that can be taken to make sure the violence we saw a new town does not happen again. i will meet with the vice- president today. i expect to have a fuller presentation later in the week to give people some specifics about what i think we need to do. my starting point is not to worry about the politics. my starting point is to focus on what makes sense, what works. what should we be doing to make sure that our children are safe, that we are reducing the incidence of gun violence? i think we can do that in a sensible way that comports with the sec

action the shooter cho, including that day, was already illegal. a spokesman for the nra said that it is disappointing, but not surprising that she, senator feinstein, is focused on curtailing the constitution instead of protecting -- excuse me, prosecuting criminals or fixing our broken mental health care system. many say that they are not ready to support a new assault weapons ban. lou: thank you very much. shannon bream, fox news correspondent. one side claims we must reduce firepower available to those who were killed to prevent deaths when we can. many say that the 1994 assault weapons ban did nothing to rectify this. our two guests join us now to discuss the matter. thank you both for being with us tonight. are you hopeful that dianne feinstein's legislation will actually be template for what the democratic party will achieve? >> well, her bill is part of what the democratic party hopes to achieve and what the president hopes to achieve. gun control has always been a tough night. i helped lead the fight in 1994 when he passes them the first time. sure enough, we did get

with vice president biden with the nra and walmart and others, what would you be sayinging? >> that the discussion has not been going anywhere that we can tell in a productive way. we are not talking about people defending themselves precisely in these gun-free zones. hopefully, at some point, we are going to come to the realization that repeating the same policy year after year getting the same deadly results is only going to get us the same deadly results is only going to get us the same deadly results the next time. >> right. so your solution, if you were there in that meeting, would be to arm every school, every church, every hospital, everywhere that members of the public can be? >> you certainly would want to encourage people who are qualified to carry concealed firearm to be able to do so in a school zone. right now that is illegal in all but a couple of our states and some of our institutions of higher learning. but, by and large, it's prohibited. that needs to stop because we have been using those as magnets where all of our mass murders have been occurring in thes
